Hello all, My name is Clement, and I'm new to the sport of spearfishing /Triton club. I live in Sacramento and am looking forward to the 2020 season. If anyone has plans to dive February- April locally, please contact me at costokes32@gmail.com. I just returned from Panama, where I speared my first couple of fish and can't wait to try the kelp forest. Best, CS 312.508.8933
Hey There Clement,
Welcome to the club. I'd highly encourage you to take a freediving certification class. Free diving is pretty dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Safety should be of utmost importance in this regard. I was diving for almost a decade before I took a class and I can't tell you how valuable it was to me. Made me a significantly safer and better diver (thanks to Rebekah - her info is below - I'm now diving in the triple digit range). Hit up Rebekah. She is a STUD and not only is a PFI but also Level 2 Malchonov instructor (she first to offer it in USA). She is also a judge at the CMAS Championships and various other international freedive competitions as well as the official instructor of Monterey Bay Tritons Spearfishing Club. https://www.facebook.com/MBAYFreediving/ Call (831) 200-3485 contact@mbayfreediving.com Just a side note, I'd advise you not pick your trainer based on price, but on pedigree. Anyone can teach the basics, but only great teachers can really tailor their teaching to you specifically. For gear, Jason at the Freedive shop should be able to help you out (tell him I say hi!). Otherwise, hit up Parviz (Red Triangle Spearfishing) if you're up north and if you're down in Monterey, Bamboo Reef has a ton of dive gear and most of their team is very knowledgeable when it comes to spearfishing spots, techniques, etc (tell them I sent you and you'll get a discount). Rebekah used to work there too. If you have any additional questions, please let me know. Also, I live in Pacific Grove (Monterey area) and dive a lot down here. Happy to have you along for a dive if you can make it down.
Eric,
Thank you for the great information. I'm working on enrolling in a Free Dive class and have been in touch with Rebekah. I need to coordinate my schedule so that I can take a class this spring, however the logistic prove to be challenging.
I will be in Pebble Beach Sunday diving with the N. Cal Divers and hope to arrive a day early to attend the Triton annual meeting. If you're available for diving Saturday, I wouldn't mind joining you if you have time for a newbie. Thanks again!
Best,
CS
Hey Man! Looking forward to meeting you at the Triton event on Saturday. The good news is, I'll definitely be diving. The bad new is, I'm planning on trying to put some decent fish on the board and will likely be diving at more advanced spots. Let's plan on doing an easier dive in the very near future? Which N. Cal Divers are you going with on Sunday? Nor Cal Skin Divers? Nor Cal Underwater hunters? Or did you just mean guys from Nor Cal =P
Sounds good. NorCal Skin Divers, we're having a club dive at pebble beach Sunday. However, a fellow member sent me the weather forecast and informed Saturday might be our best opportunity to fish.
Thanks again, I look forward to meeting you soon.
Best,
CS
Tell Justin I say hi!
Hey Clement,
I am also new to the sport and wanted to get a dive in on Saturday. I don't have much experience (only 3 dives and all up north) but if you don't mind the lack of experience, I am available. Let me know if you are interested.
And Eric, thank you for the free diving training information! I have been looking for a free diving class that is more advanced and stresses safety.
Hello Adam,
I would definitely like to team up for a Dive. Give me a call at 312-508-8933 or via email so that we can coordinate logistics.
best,
CS
