Since the number of official meetings for 2019 is being reduced to help the board provide the best content and presentations possible, I'm going to try to hold some unofficial Tritons dive days to help people link up and get out in the water. This way we can all get together and dive without all the Fresno board members having to make the long drive up. These dive days are not official Triton events, but rather just a way to get group members together and diving. As always, your safety is your own responsibility.
For anyone interested, would you rather have initial dates set (which would be canceled a few days prior to the dive if conditions are poor) or would you rather that I wait and just set up a dive about a week in advance if conditions look like they will be good?
Also, please feel free to provide any suggestions on specific things you'd like. Dives can include anything from trying to help people with sorting out gear issues, improving dive form, learning new hunting techniques, targeting new species... whatever people would find useful.
I am thinking of doing these as mostly shore dives, but with a few kayak dives as well (this is because I assume that most Tritons do not have kayaks - feel free to correct me if that doesn't seem to be the case). I also will try to spread out the dive locations and only repeat a location if required by conditions. I assume most people want dives in Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur but I'd also be open to doing dives up north in Sonoma & Mendocino.
While I'm confident in my diving, I don't know every dive spot and I don't know everything there is to know about targeting every species. So if you have spots or knowledge to share, feel free to chime in! Or if you would like to set up an unofficial dive of your own, feel free to post it here for other Tritons to join in on.
Great idea Luke. I like the idea of a fluid format, so that we can let each other know when great conditions are on the horizon. I went ahead and "followed" this post (which hopefully means that I'll get an email when someone else posts?)
Still being relatively new to spearfishing, I'm remembering times over the past couple of years when I was super amped on diving and checking the reports and forecasts practically every day. But there's always periods where life pulls you in different directions and you're not paying attention for a bit. Well, with all of us collectively watching, and some sort of email alert ('cause I don't always check the forums), this could really be a great way to get all of us in the water more.
All it takes to reset my priorities are the words "good viz" - I'm there.
For beginner divers, at least for me, a lot of the challenge is learning to truly relax while breathing up. Good visibility helps me tremendously with this. At the Triton X last year we had great vis (40'+) and I easily added 10 seconds to my bottom time and 10' depth due to the excellent conditions.
Luke, I’ll be following this as well. It’d be great to get the chance to dive with other members and get to know everyone. I’m up for both North and Central dives when ever they come up.
Hi, are there any of these unofficial dive days in the near future? I am planning on a shore dive this weekend, where do you guys recommend diving for rock fish?
